Many substances are radioactive. It includes natural and synthetic substances. There are many types of radiation known to us like X-rays, Gamma rays, Alpha, Beta and Protons.
The side effects of radiation are very important in the side effects caused by destructive weapons like atomic bombs. Three important side effects of radiation exposure are blood cancer, cancer of other organs and shortening of life expectancy. Among the aforementioned radiations, X-rays and gamma rays can penetrate deep into the body.

X-rays use the property of x-rays to pass through the body to take pictures. Due to the different density of bones, muscles, air, more or less x-rays can pass through them and the x-rays fall on the plate. Its visual form is X-ray photo. Radioactive iodine is used to see if the thyroid gland is working properly.
Gamma rays kill body cells. This property is used in radiation therapy. With the help of a machine, rays emitted from radioactive cobalt metal are released under special control on the cancerous organ. This treatment is done as many times as needed.
Radiation kills cancer cells. Radiation therapy is usually used if the cancer is not curable with surgery or drug therapy. In this way radiation therapy can prolong the life of thousands of cancer patients.
