Osteoporosis means porous bones. This is one such symptom, which is a silent disease. In which bone loss weakens the bones increasing the risk of fracture. After the completion of 35 years of age, the loss of bones in the body of a person is not compensated. Common fracture sites are the spine, wrist, and lumbar spine.

*Osteoporosis Signs and Symptoms…*
• Frequent back pain
• Loss of height with age
• Bone fractures more easily than expected

*Risk Factors for Osteoporosis…*
• Gender Women have a higher risk of developing osteoporosis than men.
• Age As you age, the risk of osteoporosis increases.
• If a family history is present in a parent or sibling, you are also at increased risk.
• Decreased calcium intake Calcium is the most important mineral for increasing bone strength.
• Body posture People with a petite body posture are at a higher risk of osteoporosis.
• Hormones Estrogen levels in women’s bodies decrease after menopause and the risk of osteoporosis is highest.

• Thyroid problems Too much thyroid hormone can cause bone loss. Medications taken to treat underactive thyroid also cause bone loss.
• Excessive smoking and cigarette smoking
• Sedentary lifestyle Individuals who work or sit in a sitting position for most of the day are at increased risk of osteoporosis.
• Medications due to certain medications, e.g. Steroids increase the risk of osteoporosis.

*Remedies to Prevent Osteoporosis…*
• Make sure you get enough calcium from your diet or form (about 1000 – 1200 mg/day, but it depends on your age)
• Get adequate amounts of vitamin D (400 -1000 IU/day).
• Stop smoking and alcohol consumption
• Begin balance exercises
• Improve balance and prevent falls with exercise and yoga.
• Minimize if there is a dangerous position or structure in the house where you could fall and break.
